I'm sorry to take so long to get back to you on this one! Waliguy had a list of shops posted in here that did headshaves and I believe when I "accidentally" did some pruning, we lost that post! I'll try to add to this list over time, but so far I did find these guys in St. Paul and I thought it looked like a cool shop:

This place is the real deal - a guy's paradise (or so it looks from the website!) _________________ Carpe Diem "Seize the Day" |

Would love to find a men's spa that would include a good headshave, scalp treatment, facial, message, manscaping, nice clothes, cologne, the whole nine yards. When I was through, I'd like to look like I was ready to be photographed for a Men's Fashion magazine. You know a once in a blue moon pampering that would bring out my best and give me personal coaching on how to get the most of my bald look. .
It would be fun.

I hear you... I sneezed once while shaving near my temple (one of those explosive, absolutely no warning kind of sneezes) and I didn't think I was ever going to quit bleeding...
Back in the day when I was trying different razors to see which one worked best for head shaving, I was using one with those safety wires across the blades and one of the wires somehow came loose and raked across the side of my head. OW! _________________ - Rich G.

Does anyone know of another shop in the Twin Cities that does bald head shaves? I stopped by Heimes Haberdashery - Truefitt & Hill Barbershop and shave parlor today and got a face shave but was told that they no longer do head shaves there.
I just retired from my job on Tuesday, 2/3/09 and wanted to treat myself to the works: a hot lather face shave and a head shave. I was only able to get the face shave. I did pick up some good pointers on how to do a better job in the future.
Any comments on this would be welcome. |

Baldjoeg,
Unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with the Twin Cities (I've only visited occasionally on business and thought it was a very nice area of the country).
In Washington, shops that cater to Military and Public Safety personnel often do good headshaves as there seems to be a demand for this style.
Otherwise, see if there is a Latino &/or African American barbershop nearby as they are more likely to do headshaves. Again, it may be different in the Minneapolis area, but near Washington it is not an issue for a Caucasion to go into a barber that caters to another ethnic group.
Good luck,

Thanks KC. I never thought of that.
My main reason for wanting to go to a barber that does head shaves was to get some pointers on how to do a better job. I have had a few nicks in the process which is probably part of the learning curve.
I want to thank you and others for your comments. I have found them really helpful and enjoy reading them.

Baldjoeg,
First, congratulations on retirement. I hope you have good plans for the future as life is way too short not to make the most of it. I'm fortunate that I like what I do for a living; however, I do enjoy my playtime a whole lot more.
I recently came back from a trip out of town and decided to get my head shaved at a barbershop near the airport as I was a little scruffy. This shop, does cater to a lot of public safety personnel; and as it turned out, my barber shaved his head and was a heck of a nice guy. We did talk about techniques and was very flattered that I engaged him in conversation on this topic. More importantly, he gave me some good advice with soap prep and proper angle of a DE razor that I've incorporated into my routine. Finding the right shop is definitely trial and error and you need to go with your gut feeling as in any situation.
My parting shot is that there are gentleman's shops and spas that specialize in good headshaves. There is one in Vegas at one of the hotels I've heard about. For the prices they charge, their barbers really should give pointers and be hospitable.
All the best; and remember, folks around here give good advice too.

Thanks Ken. That is great advice.
You have really been a big help to me and I appreciate it.
I have tried a couple of DE razors myself but need more practice. I just bought another one last week when I got the pricey facte shave. I susally use wither a Gillette Mach !!! or my Gillette Fusion Power razor. They work pretty well and I have had better luck with them. I have nicked myself a few times when I used athe DE razor. It was a cheaper one so that may be part of the problem.
What did the airport barber say about soap prep prior to the shave? I have found it helpful to use a little baby oil before lathering up. The razor seems to glide smoother when I do this.
Virginia is a great State. We were in Richmond in November over Thanksgiving to visit my son who was in Advanced Individual training at Ft. Lee.
Thanks for your great wishes. Take care.

Thanks Joe G, you flatter me.
Regarding the soap, a little more moisture on the brush helps create the proper texture for a comfortable shave. You don't want it drenched, but my bristles were more damp and as a result I wasn't getting as good a lather. You want to put the brush under very hot water until the bristles feel heavy and saturated, then hold the brush over the sink until the water stops dripping on its own. I tended to shake it dry.
Regarding the DE, my barber recommended a slightly steeper angle (about 60 degrees) anytime you hit a curve wheater it be the chin, crown, etc. and use shorter, light strokes while shaving. My Merkur, DE is a little heavier and that allows me not to apply too much pressure. I also have a slightly larger handle (they call it a barber pole) that allows me to grip it easier and have more control without applying pressure.
I've found that the moment you apply pressure with a DE, is when you get nicked. In contrast, I'm impressed with how the DE shaves; not to mention, I really like the look of a finely crafted DE razor.
Thank you so much for your kind words about the Old Dominion. I'm proud to say that my maternal Grandfather was born in Richmond and my father also did advanced training at Ft. Lee. If there is any place I'd consider home, it would be Virginia.

Thanks Ken,
Thanks for sharing the tips you got about prep from the barber.
I think that I was doing the same thing you did with the shaving brush. I think I was also putting too much pressure on the DE razor which caused the nicks. Ouch! I am currently recovering from one I got last Saturday. It takes a lot of practice. I am much more comfortable doing the shave myself. SO they say - practice makes perfect.
I have also asked other fellow head shavers what their technique is and how often they shave, what razor they use etc. Most people have said that they shave every other day. I usually need to do so every day as my hair is darker on the back.
Your advice had been the best. How often so you shave?
Take care.
