TWO LOOK-ALIKES BETTER THAN ONE
By: Martiga Lohn, News-Tribune August 6, 1999

Jesse the Guv and Jesse the Bod faced off Thursday afternoon at Spirit Valley Days in West Duluth.
It ended in a draw. Chris Willie of Superior and Wayne Olson of Duluth -- two men with starkly different imitations of Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura -- tied in a Ventura look-alike contest.
Wearing a black suit, sunglasses and a moustache, Willie went for a stern-faced Jesse the Guv look. Willie even has the political ambitions to go with his look -- he hopes to run for Wisconsin State Assembly some day.
His alter-ego took inspiration from Ventura's wrestling days. Olson wore Zubaz , a muscle T-shirt, a bandana on his head, sunglasses and a pink feather boa. He flexed his muscles when he walked on stage.
``Yeah, Jesse!'' yelled a woman watching.
Both Willie, a network administrator for the Duluth Teachers Credit Union, and Olson, a heating and air-conditioning installer, altered their physical appearance before the contest.
Willie shaved his goatee Wednesday night to look more like Ventura -- but stressed that he has been shaving his head since before Ventura's political star rose.
Olson said his wife, Sharon, shaved his shoulder-length blond hair a couple of days before the contest. ``I had hair until the other night,'' he said.
One other contestant, Mitch Levy of Duluth, also shaved his head -- but not specifically for the contest.
``I shaved this a couple weeks ago because it was so warm out,'' he said. ``Guys at work last week were going, `Hey, Guv! How's it going, Guv?' ''
After the contestants answered questions and posed for about half an hour, the crowd couldn't decide between the Guv and the Bod.
The contestants were asked what they would do for West Duluth if elected president. Olson pledged to have Spirit Valley Days every weekend. Willie promised to ``think a little before opening my mouth.''
Contest sponsor Tia Conley of Tia's Fashions and Gifts asked the two men to share first prize -- four Jesse Ventura action figures, a pizza gift certificate and a ride in Thursday evening's Spirit Valley Days parade.
Both men said they liked Ventura's to-the-point style.
``There's both a strength and a weakness in that he says what he thinks,'' Willie said.
``He's blunt, to the point, says it as it is,'' Olson said.
Olson also said he'd like to take Ventura fishing. ``Bring him up here and show him how to fish the river.''
