The Brotherhood Loses It's Champion

12 April, 2008 12:34

Julie Olson, Mission Coordinator

I received some heartbreaking news last night...

Chris Mitchell "AKA Waliguy" was killed in a car accident yesterday afternoon.

Chris was our marketing consultant. He contacted the Brotherhood about a year ago because he saw something that he felt had incredible potential. He had as much passion for the cause as we do. In fact, he often told me that he had a hard time separating his work with the Brotherhood with his passion for it. He always gave at least three times more to this organization than he was ever compensated for. The last time I spoke with Chris, he called us his "favorite" client. Chris' girlfriend called today to let us know what had happened because he talked about the Brotherhood all the time. He will be so greatly missed. He was so excited about the upcoming Saints game. It's going to be incredibly hard for us to do it without him. The event will go on as scheduled July 26, 2008 and will be dedicated in his memory.

We received this note from his girlfriend Linda:

Hello to all of you.

My name is Linda. I am Chris's girlfriend. I received word of the accident around 1pm this afternoon from his daughter. I rushed to the hospital but it was too late for all of us...he was gone.

I know he enjoyed the this website immensely. He would talk about you all as true friends...not virtual reality. Julie is right, he was a part of this because of his passion for what he believes in...the Brotherhood was not a job...it was a passion for Chris. It was a part of who he was.

He embraced his baldness and enjoyed a community that shared that same boldness. You all got to know Chris a bit....his humor, passion and zest for life is unmistakeable and contagious. He will be truly missed by all who loved him.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and kind words. Please feel free to contact me for more information. I can give you my number if you'd like to reach me.

Chris was an amazing person. He was a man of character, values and integrity and always strived to be the best he could be.

His life lives on in his memory. He will be loved and missed by all that knew him.

Please keep his family in your prayers. He has 3 children and a grandbaby who lost a father/grandfather way too soon.

Linda

The Bald Truth About CEO's

03 April, 2008 17:43

By: Del Jones, USA Today

CEOs seem to instinctively know that it's better to be authoritative than indecisive. They know about the vision thing and the passion thing. They even know a few leadership lessons that aren't taught in business school — such as, it helps to be tall. But an unscientific survey of USA TODAY's panel of CEOs and other evidence suggest that baldness might be a blind spot for many.

TELL US: If you had to change your hair or your height to make it to the top of the corporate ladder, which would you choose?

CEOs say being bald doesn't impede success and, given a choice, it's better to be bald than short. So widely held is this conventional wisdom among top executives that when asked to choose, most CEOs say they'd take 2 more inches of height over a full head of Robert Redford hair.

Hair Growth Remedies in History

27 February, 2008 20:18

Julie Olson, Mission Coordinator

Oh the crazy things that people have done to try to grow hair. Wow!

The ancient Egyptians were among the first to develop treatments for baldness - rancid fat from snakes, geese, crocodiles, hippos, lions, and ibexes. These were serious topical ointments; no greasy kids' stuff. The bad smell was key, for it was proof that the concoctions were working. We're still fooled by this concept today, for everyone knows medicine is supposed to taste bad. Denorex, a dandruff shampoo, prided itself with the motto "it tingles."

The great Greek doctor Hippocrates treated his patients' baldness with pigeon droppings. Aristotle, as brilliant as he was, tried goats urine to remedy his own baldness. Julius Caesar was bald, which is ironic because the name Caesar, from the Latin "caesaries," means "abundant hair." His gal Cleopatra prepared pastes for him made of ground horse teeth and deer marrow. (Rancid hippo fat was apparently passe in the Egyptian courts by this time.)

Alas, Cleopatra's salves didn't work. Neither did Roman cures of sulfur, tar, and the finest samples of animal urine from around the Mediterranean. Julius caved in and simply tried to cover his bare head; he took to wearing wreaths of laurel. (He was known as the king of bad comb-overs, too, according to Roman scribe Pliny.) The mighty Hannibal was bald and didn't like it one bit. Like Captain Kirk in Star Trek, Hannibal was never in a fight scene without his toupee.

Baldness treatments such as urine and rancid fat survived the fall of the Roman Empire, unlike those worthless, pagan tomes on geometry and iambic pentameter. The Renaissance brought cow saliva. (Ah, cow saliva, not cow urine. Progress.) Meanwhile in China, treatments moved forward with the introduction of animal testes mixed with ground herbs. Meditation and headstands had long been a standard cure there and in India.

Alopecia Areata & Attitude

21 February, 2008 11:28

Julie Olson, Mission Coordinator

This morning I found a great website devoted to supporting women with Alopecia Areata. You'll find a link to the website below this brief article from one of their blogs about attitude:

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.

"Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today." So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.

"Hmm," she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today." So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that she had only one hair on her head.

"Well," she said, "today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail." So she did and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head.

"Yah!" she exclaimed. "I don't have to fix my hair today!"

Attitude is everything.
