He was the lush-haired young man who broke a thousand girl's hearts in teen movie Grease. But for his latest role Hairspray actor John Travolta has been transformed - into a bald-headed middle-aged thug. The actor was pictured on the set of new film From Paris With Love, which was filming on location on rue Saint-Denis in the French capital's red light district yesterday.

Good, Better, Bald

07 November, 2008 16:34

We found this fun article online today:

When It comes to hair, remember; if you ain't got it, flaunt it!

By Martin Newlands

So you’ve finally noticed that either your head is growing at a pace that your hair can not match, or you’re going bald. I’m here to bring you a message of hope. All, is not lost. Well, apart from your hair, that is. But, as I will point out, sometimes bald is better.

Before the good news, an unhealthy dose of realism. You should get used to the fact that the tragic loss of your hair is a constant source of amusement to others. It is one of those bizarre paradoxes with which life head-butts you across the nose from time to time. Although society frowns on the ridiculing of the wobbly and the downright paint-peelingly ugly, it declares open season on baldies.

“He’s losing his hair!” trilled a charming lady, one of the first to out me as a potential chrome-dome. My response? “I can wear a wig. What are you going to do about your face?” Needless to say, my mild – though apt – retort was deemed brutal and my failure to enjoy the obvious humour of my predicament unseemly.

Consider the plethora of rib-tickling names that the Hairy Ones come up with for us: conehead, pankop, Kojak and – my personal favourite – slaphead. I’m not sure where this last charming term of endearment originated, but my money’s on The Benny Hill Show. One of the long-suffering regulars on the show, a perfectly respec-table elderly gent, would be repeatedly slapped on the back of his balding pate whenever he passed the beaming Mr Hill.

Okay, enough reality for a while. Now for the good news.

Wall Street Journal: New Science on the Genetics of Balding

14 October, 2008 05:21

We were contacted last Friday by Melinda Beck from the Wall Street Journal. She had a few questions for Mike as she was working on the following article:

Hair Apparent? New Science on the Genetics of Balding

The conventional wisdom on baldness has long held that men inherit their mother's father's hair, or lack of it.But that doesn't explain the legions of men whose pates look more like their own dads'.

Two studies in the journal Nature Genetics this week shed some light on that mystery -- even while leaving more men unsettled about the fate of their scalps. Two sets of researchers, working independently, identified a new gene variation strongly associated with early hair loss that can be inherited from either the mother's or the father's side.

"Sorry to break the bad news, but we'd known that for years, we just hadn't figured out why," says Brent Richards, an assistant professor of human genetics at McGill University in Montreal and the lead author of one study.

Most men and many women have some hair loss by their 70s or 80s. But the telltale loss of hair at the crown and temples, known as male-pattern baldness, starts as early as the 20s in about 20% of men. It's apparent in about 40% of men in their 40s and 60% of men in their 60s.

Medical Hair Loss: We Are Not Our Hair

09 October, 2008 10:14

Last night on Nightline, Robin Roberts from Good Morning America discussed her breast cancer journey. She specifically addressed the difficulty of losing her hair as a side effect of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Medical hair loss can be devastating, but she has a message: "We are not our hair."

I found a video of this interview on the ABC News website. This link will take you to the page where the video is listed.

The Silent Killer: This One's for The Sistas

22 September, 2008 12:36

We are an organization devoted to all bald people and bald causes around the world. One of the bald causes very near and dear to the Brotherhood is cancer. There are many people suffering medical hair loss as a side effect of cancer treatments. Our Brotherhood member, Mae ("Sweetchesney"), is one of those people. Mae sent me us a link to this video today so we could see her with long, flowing red locks (lol), but more importantly, we wanted to make sure to post this video for our readers because we think it has an important message. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Thanks Mae!

Medical Hair Loss: Hats & Scarves

29 August, 2008 14:30

We found a great website today for those looking for hats or scarves while going through chemotherapy. Here's a little bit about it's creator:

ABOUT NICKI SERQUINIA

In 1988, I was diagnosed with stage 3 Ovarian cancer and underwent a full year of chemotherapy. I've been a hairdresser for more than 30 years. Since 1993, I've specialized in helping cancer patients with wigs, hats and scarves. These experiences give me a unique and personal understanding of the trauma of hair loss, what works and what doesn't when it comes to head coverings, and how to help you look and feel beautiful during this challenging time. (For more of my personal story, see "Choosing Life")

At first, I was devastated at the thought of losing my hair, but I quickly realized that not too many years ago there was no chemotherapy and no treatment for my cancer. I then saw chemo as an incredible gift and I accepted the hair loss as part of the process that would help me get well.

Brotherhood Member Wins Jesse Ventura Look-Alike Contest

22 August, 2008 10:12

The following article was submitted to us by new Brotherhood member Chris Willie. It may be old news, but it's new to us here at the Brotherhood:

TWO LOOK-ALIKES BETTER THAN ONE

By: Martiga Lohn, News-Tribune       August 6, 1999

Jesse the Guv and Jesse the Bod faced off Thursday afternoon at Spirit Valley Days in West Duluth.

It ended in a draw. Chris Willie of Superior and Wayne Olson of Duluth -- two men with starkly different imitations of Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura -- tied in a Ventura look-alike contest.
Wearing a black suit, sunglasses and a moustache, Willie went for a stern-faced Jesse the Guv look. Willie even has the political ambitions to go with his look -- he hopes to run for Wisconsin State Assembly some day.

His alter-ego took inspiration from Ventura's wrestling days. Olson wore Zubaz , a muscle T-shirt, a bandana on his head, sunglasses and a pink feather boa. He flexed his muscles when he walked on stage.

``Yeah, Jesse!'' yelled a woman watching.

Beach Volleyball Day 5 Preview: Top seeded team faces unbeaten opponent

Updated: 2008-08-13 01:00:11

(BEIJING, August 12) -- The Beijing Olympic Beach Volleyball competition will continue its Day five run on Wednesday at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground.

In the Women's competition, the top seeds Tian Jia and Wang Jie of China will take on Norwegian pair Kathrine Maaseide and Susanne Glesnes, who have not been defeated in the last two matches. The focus is on which team will continue the winning streak.

Ana Paula Conelly and Larissa Franca of Brazil will take on Tamsin Barnett and Natalie Cook of Australia. The hastily arranged Brazilian team performed impressively in the last two matches, but it is doubtful whether they can win a match with opponents like Cook, bronze medallist at the Atlanta 1996 and gold medallist at the Sydney 2000, and Barnett, the 2007 FIVB Most Improved Player.

Men's No. 3 seeds Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego of Brazil will face a real challenge from Australian duo Andrew Schacht and Joshua Slack, who also remain unbeaten in the last two matches. The encounter between two in-form teams is worth expecting.

Also in Men's competition, the No.2 seeds Philip Dalhausser and Todd Rogers of the United States will take on Mariano Joaquin Baracetti and Martin Alejo Conde of Argentina. As all four teams in the pool have the same competition record, it will be a win-or-die match that decides which team goes to the knockout stage.
